Newspaper editors work under intense pressure and must write up news headlines very quickly. Occasionally, the headlines turn out to mean something very different than what they were intended to mean.
Each one of the following headlines actually appeared in a newspaper at some point.
Choose one, write out two sentences, the first infer what you REALLY think the story was about. For the second sentence, make an inference about what an alternate story might have been for the headline.

I think this story is about a dog and police officer who fight crime together. I can infer that a squad dog helps the police by biting the criminal.

ReplyDeleteI think this headline is about someone who stole a painting and left the painting hidden in a tree.Another story might be that a group of people made a plan to steal a painting and the leave the painting around a tree.

ReplyDeleteI think that it means that a stolen painting was not litterally found by a tree, like the tree went and looked for it but, the stolen painting was found near a tree. I think that another story might be that the real criminal dropped it by a tree and forgot about it or the criminal left it by a tree and was going back to pick it up later.
I think its about a police squad helping a police dog bite victims. The police let a dog go find a victim and bite him.
ReplyDeleteI think the headline was about a dog barking at a stranger, and a boy about 8 or 9 telling their parents. Another a story is a large dog was barking at the door maybe the boy or girl who owned it, told his parents.
ReplyDeleteI think the stolen painting found by a tree article was saying that the painting was next to the tree. Then it sounds funny because it seems like the tree stole it.

Eye Drops Off Shelf
ReplyDelete1. Both Eye and Shelf were last names for another person and Eye may had dropped the charges off for Shelf.
2. An eye rolled off a shelf of which someone liked it and wrote something about it.
