We had a great time at Field Day last week! The weather was BEAUTIFUL! Thank you to all the parents and volunteers who came and spent the day with us. I know the students had a great time!

Here are some pictures from our day:

Bridge Project

In Math and Science we are becomming bridge designers! The students are planning, designing and building bridges out of nothing but white glue and popsicle sticks. They seem to be really enjoying this project! We will test our bridges next week to see how strong they are.

Fifth Grade T-Shirt

Today is THE LAST DAY to order the 5th Grade T-Shirt! We have sent home a few flyers but I thought it might be easier if you were able to just click it.

The shirt looks like this:

It has all the names of our Fifth Grade class of 2011!

The shirts are $5 and can ONLY BE ORDERED ONLINE! We were hoping that the students would order them and then wear them to the 5th Grade Party in June and then be able to wear them as we did our Celebration march around the school on the last day!

Please order one! :)

This Week

Thursday is Science TAKS! The students have been studying really hard for this for a LONG time. Please make sure that your student gets a good amount of sleep on Wednesday night and eats a healthy breakfast on Thursday. We will have muffins and orange juice at school...but you may want to feed them before.

Finch Nest

This weekend, Mr. Douglas and I made a discovery in one of our hanging plants.

I had noticed some beautiful song birds chriping at all hours of night coming from my front porch, so I assumed they were hanging out there. In the morning, when I went to check it out I noticed two birds were flying around the basket, sitting on the chain and zooming in and out of my plant. The dad looked like this:

Birdinfo.com

When the birds were away from the plant I took a peak inside and this is what I saw!

4/16/11
The parents have been bringing little seeds and parts of plants to surround the egg with. I will keep you up to date with the progress of our egg! Our class is going to assume this egg as a class pet, so we will shortly be naming the egg and watching it closely through pictures I take while at home.

UPDATE: Our class had decided to name our little egg...Leonardo De'FINCHY!!
But Finchy for short.

Keep track with us!

Boosterthon

Robertson is participating in the school's first Boosterthon!

Students have been asked to participate by getting family members, friends and community members to donate by pledging a certain dollar amount for each lap the student will run. The Fun Run will take place on April 15th. 5th grade will run from 11:15-12:15 during the day. You are more than welcomed to come watch your student run! There are prizes that each student can win based on their donations.

Our class will be deciding on a team name, and as a team will be trying to raise the most funding in the school! Help your student by getting them in contact with as many potential sponsors as possible!

AND if we get donations from EVERY STATE in the U.S. Mr I. will dress up like Justin Bieber!

Thanks Justinbieberblog!

Sensory Language

The week before we left for the break we studied how authors use sensory language (language that applies to the 5 senses) to help us make connections and inferences with their work. Here are some fun pictures we took while doing an activity to practice identifying sensory languages and which sense it applied to.

Enjoy!

Back to School!

I hope everyone had a MARVELOUS Spring Break! I know I had a great one. I spent my break going camping, hiking, four wheeling, planting flowers and relaxing. I missed all my students though so it's great to be back...even if I am still adjusting to getting up early after a week of sleeping in!

Only 2 more months until summer! I can't believe how fast it is all going!

Vocabulary

This week we are starting something new for our 5th graders.

In addition to Spelling once a week, we are now introducing Vocabulary! Each week our spelling list will have a corresponding Vocabulary list. This list will consist of EIGHT words that your student will learn on Monday, have a practice assignment due on Friday and then take a quiz over on Friday.

The Vocabulary word list is made of the EIGHT words on the Spelling list that have the Greek or Latin root. That way the student is working with the same set of words.

This week, our Vocabulary consists of Geometry words to help introduce our new Geometry Vocabulary in Math Class.

Please help your student study these words at home over the week. They can make flashcards, you can quiz them...or come up with your own creative way to study!

Our first Vocab quiz will be THIS Friday!
